Not sure why I ever decided to watch this film, after all it had no stars, no catchy songs and no flash promos. I think the only thing that actually attracted me to this film was the fact that Tulip Joshi was in the film, I liked her in Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai but never saw her in a film after that. Despite having a big forehead there is something very alluring about her!
The story goes like this, Kunal Mehra is a junior artist with aspirations of making it big in the movie world, but his constant auditions cannot land him the big break through he desires. Then one day he thinks he's hit the jackpot when he comes across a newspaper headline with his photo attached branding him the next big thing. It transpires that the photograph and the news story is not about him but the offspring of Bollywood film mogul Mr Saxena - Karan Saxena. Karan is groomed to be the next Bollywood hearthrob, but there is one problem - he can't act, he can't dance and he can't be bothered! Kunal is identical to Karan in his appearance and is soon drafted in to take Karans place in the film as a body double. The two lookalikes hit it off and soon become good friends during a shooting trip to Bangkok. The twist at the interval throws Kunal in to the limelight and he becomes the star that he always dreamed of. Can I handle the fame? Is stardom really for him? What happens to the love of his life Mausam?
This film took my by total surprise, it's actually very good. When I first saw Kunal Khemu, I laughed wondering how this guy with bum fluff ever became a hero. But Khemu is excellent in this film and essays both his characters with ease. The storyline was fairly fresh and the pace was quite good, there were a few lags after the interval but it didn't detract from the overall enjoyment of the film. Two scenes that really stick out are the speech gievn by Khemu at the climax and a scene between Khemu and his parents - Sharat Saxena in particular. There is another heroine in this film, Aushima Sawhney who I think is ugly! I just could not warm to her character at all.
The one major criticsim would be the fact that no one actually questioned the fact that these two guys looked exactly the same! They were identical in every way but they kind of just accepted it! I guess I would have probably prefered a typical separated at birth explanation! But that was just minor, as Super Star is an entertaining flick with a decent storyline and a very likeable hero in Kunal Khemu.
3.5 out of 5
